Ó Caoláin backs ‘Dignity 4 Patients’
Sinn Féin Health & Children spokesperson Caoimhghín Ó Caoláin TD has backed the campaign of the victims of sexual abuse at the Lourdes Hospital in Drogheda. After attending the campaign’s press conference this afternoon (Wednesday), he stated:
“Over 200 people have now come forward alleging sexual abuse while in the care of the Lourdes Hospital in Drogheda. The victims need justice and closure and should be fully supported in that.
“I support the call for the establishment of an inquiry which examines the systems failures that allowed abuse to occur over such a long period. The aim of such an inquiry should be to help ensure that no such abuse can happen again within the healthcare system.
“While nothing should be done that might jeopardise future prosecutions, it is not acceptable that the report of Justice T.C. Smyth should be completely suppressed. What was the purpose of such a report if it is to be buried - never to be seen, even in redacted form, by the victims themselves or by the general public? The Minister should allow the report to be published and should immediately accede to the victims’ plea for a full open inquiry.” ENDS
