Sinn Féin is the only alternative to cosy cartel politics - Mary Lou McDonald
Speaking today Sinn Féin Vice President Mary Lou McDonald said "The government's decision to go to the High Court on Monday to try and prevent the people of Donegal from exercising their democratic right to vote is an absolute disgrace”. She said that "Pearse Doherty is putting his neck on the line to confront this government and stand up for the rights of the people of Donegal and next week Sinn Féin will mount a challenge to the cosy cartel of Fianna Fáil, Fine Gael and Labour. It’s time to make a stand against insider politics."
Mary Lou said:
"Sinn Fein Senator Pearse Doherty is bringing the government before the Courts on Monday next to stand up for the rights of the people of Donegal South West. The seat of former T.D. Pat ' The Cope ' Gallagher has been vacant since June 2009 – more than 16 months and it is clear that the government has absolutely no intention of holding the by-election.
"Two further bye-elections have been put on the back burner – one in Dublin South and one in Waterford. It is plain as day, the Government has delayed moving the necessary writs because they are afraid to face the electors at the polls. They don’t want any challenge to their status quo.
"The government has invited Fine Gael and Labour into private talks – to discuss the economic disaster the government created and behind closed doors they are going to do what they always do – protect those at the top.
"It is no surprise that the government expect to get Fine Gael and Labour to row in behind their failed agenda of savage cuts aimed at the most vulnerable because they have already signed up to the government’s approach.
"There are no major differences between these three parties. The whole event is a sham.
"The government is blocking Sinn Féin’s attendance at the talks because we are the only party setting out a different approach which is about cutting the deficit over a realistic time period and growing the economy. They don’t want to hear different ideas. Sinn Féin is now the only party offering a real alternative to the cosy cartel in Leinster House." ENDS
