Minister resorting to threats to force incineration upon communities - Morgan

5 April, 2004

Sinn Féin spokesperson on the Environment, Arthur Morgan T.D. has slated statements made by Minister Cullen today which amount to threatening those local authorities which have not sought to impose incineration on communities against their will.

Deputy Morgan said

"The statements by Minister Martin Cullen that local authorities who refuse to accept incineration should not expect to receive any foreign investment is a step too far. This is nothing short of a threat to communities who stand up to the Minister's bullying tactics in relation to incineration. Scandalously, he has particularly targeted his threats at parts of the west of Ireland which have been subject to decades of gross under investment.

"Minister Cullen should remember that he does not have responsibility for the Enterprise, Trade and Employment portfolio and should concentrate his energies on rectifying his own dismal failure in his current ministerial portfolio. Minister Cullen must abandon his penchant for autocracy and accept the will of communities who are totally opposed to incineration." ENDS
