De Brún votes €146m sustainable energy support

11 November, 2010 - by Martina Anderson MEP

Bairbre de Brún today voted €146 million to allow local and regional public bodies to support energy efficiency of buildings and renewable energy as well as sustainable urban transport, smart metering and smart grids.

Speaking in the European Parliament in Brussels today in advance of the vote Bairbre de Brun MEP stressed that investment support in sustainable energy can be particularly effective and beneficial when targeted at local level.

'We must seize this opportunity to invest in sustainable energy and make the transition easier for those who want to "go green", said de Brún, pointing out that energy efficiency and use of renewable energy can provide an environmentally, economically and socially more sustainable future.

The vote today will allow local and regional authorities to sensibly use unspent funds from the European Energy Programme for Recovery that cannot be committed by the end of 2010"

The following is a copy of the address delivered by Ms de Brún in the European Parliament:

Is infheistíocht chiallmhar fhiúntach í cúnamh airgeadais, caite ar éifeachtacht fuinnimh agus ar fhuinneamh in-athnuaite, a bhfuil téarnamh geilleagrach mar chuspóir aici in aimsir géarchéim eacnamaíochta. Is féidir le geilleagar ísealcharbóin poist a chruthú agus éifeachtacht níos fearr a sholáthar.

Is féidir le tacaíocht infheistíochta i bhfuinneamh inbhuanaithe bheith an-éifeachtach agus an-tairbheach agus í dírithe ar an leibhéal áitiúil. Is féidir le héifeachtacht fuinnimh agus le húsáid fuinnimh in-athnuaite todhchaí níos inbhuanaithe a sholáthar ar bhonn eacnamaíoch, ar bhonn sóisialta agus don chomhshaol, leis.

Is gá dúinn an deis seo a thapú chun infheistíocht a dhéanamh i bhfuinneamh inbhuanaithe agus an t-athrú a éascú dóibh siúd ar main leo 'éirí glas'.

Is úsáid shiosmaideach fheidhmiúil í den mhaoiniú neamhchaite ón Chlár Eorpach Fuinnimh um Théarnamh nach bhféadfar a ghealladh faoi dheireadh 2010 má thugtar deis chun maoiniú tograí infheistíochta a bhaineann le héifeachtacht fuinnimh agus le fuinneamh in-athnuaite a éascú trí údaráis áitiula agus réigiúnacha.

Cuideoidh béim níos láidre ar infheistíocht fuinnimh ghlais leis an Eoraip chun a spriocanna 2020 a bhaint amach.

Financial assistance in the field of energy efficiency and renewable energy is a solid and worthwhile investment towards economic recovery at a time of economic crisis.. Moving to a low-carbon economy can create jobs and provide greater efficiency.

Investment support in sustainable energy can be particularly effective and beneficial when targeted at local level. Energy efficiency and use of renewable energy can provide an environmentally, economically and socially more sustainable future.

We must seize this opportunity to invest in sustainable energy, and to make the transition easier for those who want to 'go green'.
