Sinn Fein the only real opposition in Leinster House – Adams

12 November, 2010 - by Pat Sheehan, Westminster

Speaking in Tallaght at a Sinn Féin selection convention for the Dublin South West constituency at the next General Election, Sinn Féin President Gerry Adams said:

“Sinn Féin is the only real opposition in Leinster House to the consensus for cuts that will penalise low and medium income earners and drive more people into poverty.”

Mr. Adams said:

“It’s time to make a stand against this bad government and its bad policies.

“We need change in the Dáil. We need more voices that will stand up against the consensus for cuts – more voices that will stand up for ordinary people.

“We need new politics, a political realignment.

“A change of government without a change in policies will be worthless.

“Fine Gael and Labour offer nothing that is substantially different from the current government. They are part of the consensus for cuts.

“Fine Gael is even considering supporting the budget. That is not an opposition.

“Sinn Féin is the only effective opposition in the Dáil – we are making a stand against cuts and giving people real choices.

“Sinn Féin has put forward an alternative to the consensus for cuts based on cutting waste, tax reform and stimulating the economy, including a new tax regime which would ensure that those who can afford to pay more do so.” ENDS
