Fianna Fáil/Green Government at fault for economic mess – Morgan

18 November, 2010

Speaking after Dáil statements on banking, Sinn Féin Spokesperson on Finance Arthur Morgan said the fault for our current economic situation lies fairly and squarely with this Fianna Fáil/Green Party Government and that they should clear out to allow for a general election.

Deputy Morgan said Brian Lenihan’s comment that he doesn’t need the Dáil’s approval to borrow funds is a blatant insult to the Irish people.

Deputy Morgan said:

“The Minister of Finance has said that he does not need the Dáil’s approval to borrow funds.

“The fact that this Government can even contemplate thrusting the Irish people into such a precarious position as to have to draw down a bailout from the EU and the IMF is totally underhanded.

“This is a blatant insult to the Irish people whose incomes will be mortgaged to repay the cost of this bank bail out.

“Saving the banking system is not the same as bailing out zombie banks. The Irish people should not have to give up even more of their blood to the walking dead. Yet this is what the Irish people are being forced to do without any consultation – borrow money from the EU and the IMF to raise the banks’ equity.

“The fault for our current economic situation lies fairly and squarely with this Fianna Fáil/Green Party Government. We don’t need a bank bailout. What we need is a Government clear-out.” ENDS
