"Unclear CAP leaves farmers in limbo"

19 November, 2010 - by Martina Anderson MEP

Bairbre de Brún MEP, speaking after the release of the Commission’s proposals document and the Commissioner’s Q&A session on the future of the Common Agricultural Policy said:

"Today's proposals together with the Commissioner's comments on the future of the CAP are in considerable need of clarification. It is very general. It told us nothing we don't already know, and the direction the Commission see the CAP progressing is not clear. "

"Many of the important questions remain unanswered. There are no clear guidelines as to how the CAP should be simplified; the questions of how to define 'active farmers' and the issue of capping payments are also left open.  The biggest question of all, the budget, is still a mystery”

"It is more necessary than ever, especially considering the current financial and economic crisis, that the future of our agricultural industry, of our food sector, is safe."
