Ferris slams proposal to cut Minimum wage

24 November, 2010 - by Martin Ferris TD

The Sinn Féin Spokesperson on Workers Rights Martin Ferris has slammed the proposal to cut the minimum wage by €1. He also claimed that the Government’s projections for job creation and reducing unemployment were fantasy.

Deputy Ferris said:

“Cutting the minimum wage and taxing people on anything above it will push more working people into poverty. It will also have a negative impact on the overall economy by reducing spending. Once again in the midst of economic calamity Fianna Fáil manage to do one last favour for their friends in ISME and IBEC.

“Far from these proposals helping to reduce unemployment they will further depress the economy and actually have the opposite effect. As others have said you cannot cut your way out of a depression.

“We need to get rid of this Government and its IMF and bondholder puppet masters before they have the chance to implement these anti social measures.” ENDS
