Family Tragedy Averted by Inches - O'Dowd

26 November, 2010 - by John O'Dowd

Sinn Féin MLA John O’ Dowd has expressed his relief that no one was killed or seriously injured after a PSNI officer fired a shot during an incident in Portadown last night.

Mr O’ Dowd said:

“I visited the family of the elderly gentleman this morning. Last night he was sitting watching his TV when a bullet fired by a PSNI officer came through the window he was sitting beside, narrowly missing him and other members of his family.

“Disaster was narrowly averted and the local community are quite rightly demanding to know why a shot was fired by a PSNI officer in a heavily populated area.

“The Police Ombudsman’s Office is now investigating this incident and I am calling on the PSNI to fully cooperate with that investigation.

“This incident originated in a brawl at an address which has been the centre of anti social behaviour in the past. Sinn Féin will be again raising the conduct at this address with the Housing Executive and calling on them to take action. ENDS
