Sue Ramsey joins protesting students in west Belfast

2 December, 2010 - by Sue Ramsey

Sinn Féin MLA for west Belfast and member of the Assembly Employment and Learning Committee, Sue Ramsey, this afternoon joined pupils from St Roses School on the Falls Road during a protest highlighting the importance of Education Maintenance Allowance (EMA) to students here.

Speaking today Sue said;

“This is an issue of deep concern for students who are currently receiving EMA right across the north, particularly given the fact that the allowance has been scrapped in England.

I can appreciate fully the concern expressed by the protesting students and others; that’s why I raised this at the committee just yesterday and urged the Department to retain this important financial support mechanism for those students, often from disadvantaged backgrounds and communities who wish to remain in further and higher education.

I look forward to again meeting with the students I joined today, as well as students from other west Belfast schools over the coming period, to assure them that we will do our utmost to ensure that EMA is protected.” CRÍOCH
