Ó Caoláin welcomes two-candidate strategy in Cavan-Monaghan

3 December, 2010 - by Caoimhghín Ó Caoláin TD

The Sinn Féin Selection Convention in the Errigal Hotel, Cootehill, Co. Cavan last night selected Kathryn Reilly and Caoimhghín Ó Caoláin as the party’s candidates for the Cavan-Monaghan constituency in the forthcoming General Election.

Welcoming the adoption of the two-candidate strategy, the sitting Deputy and Sinn Féin Dáil leader Caoimhghín Ó Caoláin said:

“The Sinn Féin organisation in Counties Cavan and Monaghan has taken the historic step of adopting a two-candidate strategy with the clear aim of winning a second Dáil seat in this constituency in the forthcoming General Election.

“I congratulate Kathryn Reilly who is an excellent candidate. She is a very intelligent, articulate and dedicated young woman. She has been a great asset to Sinn Féin’s team in Leinster House and would make a first-class Dáil representative for the people of this constituency.

“Sinn Féin in the constituency of Cavan-Monaghan has led the way in pushing forward the party’s electoral strategy in this State over many years. Next year marks the 30th anniversary of the election of hunger striker Kieran Doherty as our TD when he won the endorsement of the people for his rights and that of his comrades as political prisoners.

“Out of that 1981 election came a dedicated team of republicans who went on to build Sinn Féin in these two counties to the point where we now have a total of 27 local authority seats. Sinn Féin now has elected councillors in all eight electoral areas in Cavan and Monaghan.

“I am delighted that we are now taking the next step and setting our sights even higher – this time to win a second Dáil seat for Sinn Féin.

“This challenge could not come at a more crucial time. Our country is in crisis and people need and deserve real leadership. Sinn Féin has shown that leadership in challenging this disastrous Fianna Fáil/Green Government which has wrecked the economy, sold out sovereignty and intends to further punish low to middle income families in its totally ill-conceived budgetary strategy.

“We have shown that leadership also in providing a real alternative economic strategy, a better and fairer way forward designed to put the public finances right, retain and create jobs and set the country on a sustainable road to recovery.

“I look forward to the challenge of the General Election. We will be going all out to ensure that two Sinn Féin Teachtaí Dála from Cavan-Monaghan walk through the gates of Leinster House early in 2011.

“Gabhaim comhghairdeas le Kathryn agus le foireann Sinn Féin i gCabhán agus Muineachán.”
