Gilmore must clarify how many public servants will lose their jobs under Labour

3 December, 2010 - by Pearse Doherty TD

Sinn Féin Finance Spokesperson Pearse Doherty has called on Labour Party Leader Eamon Gilmore to clarify exactly how many public sector workers his party plans on sacking if in Government after the general election.

Deputy Doherty was commenting this evening after Roisín Shorthall claimed that the party would reduce public sector jobs by 30,000 for a start.

He said:

“There is no figure for public sector job losses in the Labour Party’s pre budget document.

“Reports say that they want to sack between 15,000 and 20,000 workers while Roisín Shorthall said on Drivetime this evening that they would start with 30,000.

“Eamon Gilmore should just clarify this figure once and for all. People need to know what they are voting for and there is no place evasiveness or fudge on this issue.

“I also note that the Labour Party says it will renegotiate the EU/IMF deal while Fine Gael says it will leave it broadly as it is. That is a major policy difference between two party’s intent on entering Government together.” ENDS
