Agreement Benchmark For DUP Proposals

8 April, 2004

In an initial response to the publication today of the DUP proposals on the All-Ireland arrangements, Sinn Féin Chief Negotiator Martin McGuinness MP said:

"The idea of long fingering a referendum on Irish Unity for 30 years is totally unacceptable. It runs contrary to the terms of the Agreement and is a non starter.

"All-Ireland arrangements are an immutable political reality. If today‚s announcement from the DUP marks an acceptance of that then they need to engage in direct dialogue with Sinn Féin.

"The Good Friday Agreement was endorsed by the people of Ireland, north and south. The Agreement will not be re-negotiated and is the benchmark for any proposals the DUP make." ENDS
