Ramsey: Sinn Féin remain opposed to student fees

14 December, 2010 - by Sue Ramsey

Sinn Féin’s Sue Ramsey MLA has said that the announcement by the Employment and Learning Minister Danny Kennedy that he is to look at the current model adopted by the Welsh Assembly not to increase fees for Welsh students shows a degree of willingness to assist student but that more must be done.

Speaking from the Assembly, where the latest stage of the Student Loans Bill is being debated, Sue said;

“Sinn Féin’s position remains clear, we are opposed to student fees.

I am glad to hear today though that the Minister is at the very least exploring a similar move to that of the Welsh Assembly in freezing fees for students. However, it is worth remembering that the Stuart Review, which was commissioned by his Department recommended that fees should not be increased here.

I would call on the Minister to continue to explore the best possible options for students and their families but also, to remember the findings of his own department’s review.” CRÍOCH
