O’Snodaigh demands legislation for ‘cash for gold’ scourge

14 December, 2010 - by Aengus Ó Snodaigh TD

Speaking this afternoon during the order of business in the Dáil, Sinn Féin Dublin South Central TD Aengus Ó Snodaigh demanded urgent legislation be introduced so that the people of his constituency be protected from the scourge of ‘cash for gold’ shops.

He said:

“There has been a surge in burglaries recently in my own constituency and in many cases jewellery has been the target. It is clear burglars are specifically targeting the elderly and those living alone as they are considered easy prey.

“It’s obvious that as we approach the Christmas period this is going to become an even more serious problem and the prevalence of these shops in certain areas, seems to only exacerbate it.

“These cash for gold shops also take advantage of the poor and the vulnerable. It is no coincidence that there is an increase in the number of these shops setting up on a short -term basis in the lead up to Christmas.

“As thieves are targeting jewellery more now than ever before, I am asking this Government to bring forward legislation to regulate shops that are offering cash for gold immediately for the protection of my community.” ENDS
