Sinn Féin to convene emergency response meeting for Belfast

29 December, 2010

Sinn Féin Belfast City Council Group Leader Cllr Jim McVeigh has called on Belfast City Council to bring together a number of stakeholder agencies to discuss the continued need for a strategic response to the ongoing water crisis.

Speaking today Cllr McVeigh said;

“I am meeting the Chief Executive of Belfast City Council this afternoon on this issue and will be urging him to bring together senior representatives from the Housing Executive, Belfast Health Trust, NI Water, the Fire and Rescue Service and other agencies urgently.

We need to see a co-ordinated and strategic citywide response to this issue, to assist those people, many of whom have been in homes with no heating for well over a week.

Sinn Féin activists across the city have been out on the ground assisting in practical ways, bringing people water and working to create better access to water. Obviously everyone knows more must be done. Our council team has been working closely with Belfast City Council who have also taken a lead role in offering practical help to people across the city and they must be commended for that.

This meeting will be about bringing the much needed focus and attention to the plight of people throughout our city. We believe that a meeting like this can only benefit the ongoing work and I look forward to taking this initiative forward.” CRÍOCH
