McElduff condemns threats against local sport

10 January, 2011 - by Barry McElduff

Sinn Fein's Sport spokesperson Barry McElduff has condemned those responsible for threatening Celtic FC Manager Neil Lennon as well as squad member Niall McGinn, both of whom had bullets addressed to them sent through the post. He has also condemned those responsible for causing a bomb alert at a GAA club in Porteglenone this evening.

Speaking this evening Mr McElduff said:

"Sadly this isn't the first threat made against Neil Lennon and it is extremely disappointing that a young soccer player like Niall McGinn is subjected to this kind of sick-minded threat.

“This evenings bomb alert at Porteglenone also highlights the blatant sectarian views held towards some of our local sporting institutions.

“Sectarianism can have no place in sport and all efforts to intimidate those who play various sports must be broadly resisted by all sections of the community as well as those is political and civic leadership. Afterall, sport and those who engage in it contribute invaluably to all of our communities." CRIOCH
