Ferris accuses Greencore ‘vultures’ of destroying sugar industry

19 January, 2011 - by Martin Ferris TD

The Sinn Féin Spokesperson on Agriculture, Martin Ferris TD, has accused Greencore of being vultures who deliberately destroyed the sugar industry in order to engage in property speculation. Deputy Ferris was speaking at a meeting of the Agriculture Committee which questioned Greencore CEO Patrick Coveney on the circumstances surrounding the closure of the Mallow and Carlow sugar factories.

Deputy Ferris claimed that Greencore had made the decision to close down the sugar sector in the hope of making a ‘quick killing’ on the property market. He said that the decision had not been made, as was claimed by the company and then Agriculture Minister Mary Coughlan, on the basis of anything to do with the EU.

He also pointed to the involvement in the company of failed property developer Liam Carroll who had acquired a 22% share in Greencore in July 2006. Ferris claimed that this was motivated solely by the prospect of using the factory sites to build on and that this was the only reason that a generations old formerly successful state company had been sacrificed.
