Ó Domhniall playing politics with Altnagalvin Radiotherapy Unit – MacLochlainn

19 January, 2011

Donegal Sinn Féin Councillor Padraig MacLochlainn has responded to the comments of Fianna Fáil Senator Brian Ó Domhniall on the current status of the Radiotherapy Unit in Altnagalvin Hospital in Derry.

Councillor MacLochlainn said:

“Senator Ó Domhniall is either being mischievous or is completely ignorant of the system of Government operating in the North.

“As a result of Unionist misrule over many years the system of Government in the North is quite different to that in the South. For example, each minister in the Stormont Assembly has complete control over his or her budget and no other Minister nor the First or Deputy First Minister can intervene in or overturn the decisions of Ministers.

“Ulster Unionist MLA Michael McGimpsey is currently the health Minister and he has decided not to provide funding to staff the Radiotherapy Unit in Altnagalvin despite the protestations of Sinn Féin and others.

“Sinn Féin has been highly active in demanding that the funding be restored for this facility and I will be attending a Sinn Féin organised public meeting on the issue along with my colleagues Pearse Doherty and Martina Anderson next Monday 24th January in the Gasyard Centre in Derry.

“This facility is too important to the people of the North West to be allowed to fall off the agenda.

“Brian Ó Domhniall shouldn’t be playing politics with this issue and my party shouldn’t need to continually remind him of the political arrangements in the Six Counties every time he decides to mount ridiculous, electorally motivated attacks. These arrangements as he has obviously forgotten have been mandated by the Good Friday Agreement.” ENDS
