21 dead and still no statement from the Health Minister

20 January, 2011 - by Michelle O'Neill

Sinn Féin MLA and vice chair of the Health Committee Michelle O’Neill has slammed the Health Minister, Michael McGimpsey, for his absolute failure to deal with the swine flu crisis following the number of deaths as a result of the virus reaching 21.

Speaking today Ms O’Neill said:

“Despite twenty one people dying of swine flu the Minister, Michael McGimpsey, has failed utterly to deal with this crisis.

“With the number of deaths now exceeding by two the total deaths for the entirety of last year, within the space of only twelve weeks, we have heard claims that we should not be concerned and that the crisis is proportionate to that of Britain.  This is clearly not the case.

“Last year was declared a pandemic. In twelve weeks we have gone beyond the impact of that pandemic.

“The invisible Minister needs to come forward immediately with a strategy to address this crisis, in order to regain public confidence in the health systems capacity to deal with swine flu.”
