Welcome as Assembly support Housing Executive Inquiry motion

9 February, 2011 - by Fra McCann

Sinn Féin Assembly member Fra McCann has welcomed the decision by the Assembly to support a Sinn Féin motion calling for an investigation into the response of the Housing Executive to the recent cold weather.

Mr McCann said:

“Sinn Féin representatives across the six counties were inundated over the Christmas period with complaints from Housing Executive tenants about the lack of response to the various problems caused by the cold weather. These included burst pipes, heating failures and significant damage including collapsed ceilings.

“It is unfortunate that we were forced to put this motion to before the Assembly due to the failure of the DSD Minister Alex Attwood to act and even acknowledge that a problem existed. To date he has instead buried his head in the sand and lavished praise on a Housing Executive operation which saw thousands of people severely inconvenienced.

“Let Mr Attwood now end the pretence and get on with the job of getting a short , sharp independent investigation carried out so that tenants will have confidence that the mistakes of the Christmas period will never be repeated again.” ENDS
