Increase in EU spending limit is unjustified and unnecessary

15 April, 2004

Sinn Féin EU candidate for the North West Pearse Doherty said that the increase in the spending limit for candidates in the European Parliament elections by 20% to €230,000 is unjustified and unnecessary and will create a more uneven playing field. Mr. Doherty said Sinn Féin will be bringing our message directly to homes in every county in Ireland. It is our policies on Europe, our all Ireland message and our work in the peace process that will see people voting for us in even greater numbers this June."

Mr. Doherty said:

"In the General Election we saw massive amounts of money spent by the establishment parties during the election campaign and in the run up to the election in billboard campaigns and other advertising, money that was not then included in election returns. Increasing the spending limit for EU candidates by 20% is unjustified and absolutely unnecessary. Unfortunately it will lead to a more uneven playing field and that is not good for democracy.

"Sinn Féin is a campaigning party. In the coming months we will be bringing our message directly to the people. We will launching an EU website, bringing our party leadership on an extensive tour of every county in Ireland and canvassing door to door. It is our policies on Europe, our all Ireland message and our work in the peace process that will see people voting for us in even greater numbers this June."ENDS
