Interdepartmental Taskforce on Institutional Abuse working to ensure adequate provision is available-McCartney
Féin Foyle MLA Raymond McCartney has welcomed news from the OFMdFM that
of the Interdepartmental Taskforce on Institutional Abuse is working to
ensure that adequate provision is available through government services to address the short term needs of survivors of historical institutional abuse
Raymond McCartney said
“I received confirmation from the OFMdFM that the Interdepartmental Taskforce on Institutional Abuse met in January to take this matter forward .An important aspect of their work will include considering the experiences of other jurisdictions in developing options for an approach that will best suit the circumstances here.
The group is also working to ensure that adequate provision is made available through government services to address the short term needs of survivors of historical institutional abuse and the work programme will include direct engagement with victims and survivors throughout the process
abuse of many children and vulnerable young people in institutions over
many years and the totally insensitive manner in which this was dealt
with has cast a dark cloud over Irish society.
The Taskforce has met with a number of victims/survivors and held discussions with officials in other jurisdictions with further meetings planned in the coming weeks.
There is an onus on us all to ensure that this abuse can never be allowed to happen again and that necessary safeguarding arrangements are put in place to guarantee protection for those who are greatest at risk.
