Gildernew attends Equine Careers’ Day at Enniskillen Campus
Minister Michelle Gildernew MP, MLA has attended Equine Careers’ Day at CAFRE’s Enniskillen Campus where she addressed industry representatives, students and staff.
The event was a great success with a wide range of equine businesses and organisations in attendance.
Speaking at the event the Minister said: “Despite the recent economic challenges, the equine industry continues to be a significant employer requiring well qualified people and it is a very important part of the social fabric of rural Ireland. In order to remain competitive, the industry needs people with up-to-date knowledge and skills.
“Although we are facing difficult times, at this juncture it is vitally important that we maintain the fundamental strengths of the equine sector, including the excellent calibre of people involved in our equine businesses and organisations, and remain poised to take advantage of any opportunities when conditions improve.”
The Minister continued: “Equine Careers’ Day is one of a range of activities organised at Enniskillen Campus to help students prepare for a career in the equine industry.
“Recently CAFRE has also been working with leading organisations in the land based sector and has developed a bursary programme to offset some of the costs incurred by students undertaking higher education courses. I commend the Tyrone Farming Society, the NI Horse Board and Intervet/Schering-Plough for recognising the value of education to the equine industry and for providing the first three bursaries to be offered to Enniskillen Campus students on a competitive basis. This is another example of excellent collaboration between the Campus and industry.”
