Health Minister Needs to Restore Health Service Morale and Public Confidence in System – O’Neil

17 February, 2011 - by Michelle O'Neill

Sinn Féin Health Spokesperson Michelle O’Neil has this morning called on Health Minister Michael McGimpsey to lead from the front in relation to the ongoing problems within the Health Department.

Ms O’Neil, who is deputy chair of the Assembly Health Committee, was speaking after yet more revelations in the media, this time in relation to the Southern Health Trust.

She said;

“The Health Department is lurching from one crisis to another and many would suggest that this is a direct result of the Minister’s semi-detached relationship from the public and the Health Service; he needs to give leadership to his Management, staff and confidence to the public that someone is in charge.

"The Health Minister and the Southern Health Trust need to spell out clearly how they manage waiting lists at Craigavon hospital and how they manage and deal with patient safety concerns raised by Consultants.

"The public need to have confidence in Craigavon hospital, Michael McGimpsey must lead from the front in delivering that confidence and change where necessary.

Concluding Mrs O' Neil said:

Michael McGimpsey is in denial and is failing health professionals, he is failing his colleagues in the Assembly and worst of all he is failing the community. People out there are genuinely concerned and the Minister, like always, is nowhere to be found.

The Minister needs to act to instil confidence and fix the obvious problems or his tenure as Minister will indeed have been one solely of failure.” CRÍOCH
