Sinn Féin would abolish ground rents – Adams

17 February, 2011 - by Pat Sheehan, Westminster

Speaking at the launch of his party’s political reform proposals in Dublin today Sinn Féin President Gerry Adams said it is disgraceful that Irish people are still paying rents to absentee English landlords almost 100 years after the 1916 Rising and the Proclamation of the Irish Republic.

He said:

“Sinn Féin would abolish ground rents. It is shameful that almost 100 years after the Rising and the Proclamation of the Irish Republic, that citizens are still paying rent to absentee English landlords.

“This includes the government paying rent to English landlords for iconic state buildings, including Government Buildings behind me, and Arbour Hill where the 1916 leaders are buried.

“This is a shameful example of the state we are in.” ENDS
