Ferris slams last minute decision to approve Corrib pipeline
The Sinn Féin spokesperson on natural resources Martin Ferris TD has slammed the approval given by outgoing Minister Pat Carey to the Corrib gas pipeline. The Minister signed the order on the day of the election last Friday.
Deputy Ferris said:
“Pat Carey issued this order on the day that he lost his seat and Fianna Fáil lost power. He had no political or moral authority to give the go ahead to a pipeline over which many concerns still exist even with the changes made following the Bord Pleanala ruling.
“The underhand manner in which this order was made proves that even in their dying days Fianna Fáil were doing favours for their friends from the Galway Races.
“The Corrib field will bring little or no economic benefits to the Irish people under current revenue terms. We have proposed that the state take a majority share in all oil and gas reserves and impose a proper taxation and royalty. The potential revenue stream from this would go a long way to addressing the current economic situation.
