Ó Donnghaile welcomes announcement on Housing for Mountpottinger Barracks site
Sinn Féin representative for east Belfast Niall Ó Donnghaile has welcomed the announcement by the Department for Social Development that the land at the former Mountpottinger Barracks site is be acquired and used for the development of family homes.
Speaking in the area this afternoon a jubilant Niall said;
“This is the culmination of a long campaign by Sinn Féin, community groups and residents in the Short Strand. For years now we have sought to see the closure and demolition of the redundant Mountpottinger Barracks and its replacement with much need social and family homes.
I want to thank and pay tribute to all those who, through many dark days, stood in protest, wrote letters, lobbied and did whatever they could to assist the the campaign, “Homes not Forts!”.
This is a victory for them and for our community.
The Short Strand has many young people waiting on the housing waiting list and the news that family homes will be developed on the site will be welcomed by those people who want to remain in the area where they were bore and reared.
I look forward to working with the DSD and hope that the Minister accepts my invitation to visit the site and see the real potential that exists for himself.
This is a good day for our community.” CRÍOCH
