FG/Labour job cuts will damage Health — Ó Caoláin

6 March, 2011

Commenting on the Fine Gael/Labour Programme for Government, Sinn Fein Health & Chlidren spokesperson Caoimhghin O Caolain said:

"The Programme promises much on health but Fine Gael and Labour want to axe 25,000 public service jobs and we are not told how many will come from the health services. You cannot cut that level of staff without damaging front-line services. There is already a staffing shortage that is gravely affecting patient care.

"There is no sign that this Coalition will reverse the health cuts imposed by Fianna Fail and the Greens. A flawed insurance-based scheme is not due to come into effect until 2016 and what happens in the meantime to address the healthcare crisis? This Government is tied to the Fianna Fail/IMF economic strategy of cutbacks which will damage our healthcare services.

"I welcome the commitment to a referendum on children's rights and urge its early delivery with the wording agreed by an all-party committee in the last Dail."
