SDLP in danger of making itself irrelevant by its negativity – McLaughlin MLA

7 March, 2011

Sinn Féin Economy Spokesperson, Mitchel McLaughlin MLA (South Antrim) commenting on the SDLP contribution to the Budget debate has said that that Party is in danger of making itself irrelevant through its persistent negativity.

Mitchel McLaughlin said:

“Throughout the entire debate around the entire Budget the SDLP along with UUP have excelled only in their negativity. They have persisted in whingeing about allocations to their respective Departments – yet at no time have they brought forward proposals detailing where the additional finance can be found.

“The Ulster Unionists have yet to come forward with one idea on revenue raising or identify which Department should suffer further reductions in order to meet the demands of their Ministers.

“The SDLP on the other hand, while demanding further expenditure of hundreds of millions of pounds on every pet project imaginable could only manage to come up with proposed amendments to the draft allocations that amounted to shifting around £22·1 million.

“I would suggest that before they make themselves totally irrelevant by irritating negativity that they get real and begin to make constructive contributions to Executive attempts at minimizing the effects of the Tory cuts on frontline services and the vulnerable in our society. Wasn’t it the SDLP as part of its Election Manifesto pledged that they were taking their seats in Westminster to prevent Benefit cuts and other attacks on our economy by the British Exchequer? Events would suggest that they are already irrelevant in Westminster.
