Sinn Féin to mark International Women’s Day at Stormont
Sinn Fein MLA's Jennifer Mc Cann, Sue Ramsey and Carál Ni Chuilín will host a tribute to the Sinn Fein Councillor Marie Moore at Stormonts Long Gallery on International Women's Day.
Speaking about the event, Sinn Fein MLA Jennifer Mc Cann said,
"This year is the 100th anniversary of International Women's Day when women all over the world will celebrate the lives of women and their achievements .
International Women's Day was first celebrated back in 1911 when women came together worldwide to campaign for better pay, voting rights and an end to discrimination.
Today it continues to be celebrated by women everywhere, and has become a global day of recognition of women's contribution to society celebrating the economic, political, social and cultural achievements of women.
Everyone agrees that women have come a long way since the first International Women’s Day in 1911, but unfortunately Gender Inequality is still very much prevalent in Irish society.
Women continue to be physically and emotional effected by domestic and sexual violence which can have a lasting effect on their health and emotional well being and also their lifetime opportunities.
They still do not enjoy Equal Pay and continue to face barriers when accessing work due to a lack of childcare provision. Evidence has shown they have also been unfairly impacted upon more as a result of current budget and welfare cuts.
Sinn Fein have often celebrated International Women's Day by honouring inspiring women and recognising their contribution and achievements and this year we are celebrating the life of Sinn Fein Councillor and Activist Marie Moore.
Maire was a lifelong Republican who dedicated her life to the struggle for Irish Freedom and Equality. We hope that this tribute to her on International Women's Day will bring people together to celebrate the achievements of a very remarkable and inspiring woman."
The Event will begin at 7pm on Tuesday 8th March at the Long Gallery at Parliament Buildings Stormont. CRÍOCH
