Ferris calls for reinstatement of full third level grants

8 March, 2011 - by Martin Ferris TD

The Sinn Féin TD for Kerry North/Limerick West Martin Ferris TD has called on the new government to restore the grants for third level students. Kerry Education Service yesterday notified students of cuts made on foot of changes introduced in the last Budget. Many students are particularly affected by the new criteria increasing the qualifying distance for the non adjacent grant from 24k to 45km.

Deputy Ferris said:

“The Fine Gael/Labour Programme for Government is full of well meaning platitudes about education. ‘Radical’ and ‘reform’ and ‘equity’ feature prominently. Those buzz words mean nothing in a situation where thousands of students may be forced out of third level education because of the cuts in grants.

“The new Minister for Education, whoever he or she may be, must immediately rescind the cuts introduced by the outgoing government last December. Otherwise, their words will disguise a situation in which third level education is restricted to fewer and fewer students.” ENDS
