Cuts in Ministers’ pay tokenistic – Doherty

10 March, 2011 - by Pearse Doherty TD

Sinn Féin Finance Spokesperson Pearse Doherty has described the reduction in Ministers’ pay, announced by the Government today, as tokenistic. Deputy Doherty said his party will be bringing forward a Bill to reduce Ministers’ pay by 40% and TDs’ pay by 20%.

He said:

“This pay cut is simply a tokenistic gesture designed to please an electorate that is demanding fundamental change and real political reform.

“The reality is that even after this cut Ministers will still be paid €3,255 per week in the midst of an economic crisis. These are the very same Ministers who are refusing to reverse cuts to social welfare recipients and asking people to live on €188 per week.

“Sinn Féin will be soon be bringing forward a Bill to reduce Ministers’ pay by 40% and TDs’ pay by 20%.

“During the course of the general election all parties claimed to support real political reform. Sinn Féin will be testing that commitment with legislation and we will be watching carefully to see who supports our Bill and who doesn’t.” ENDS
