Junior Ministers should not be paid extra – McDonald

10 March, 2011 - by Mary Lou McDonald TD

Commenting on the announcement of the new Junior Ministries today Sinn Féin Deputy Leader Mary Lou McDonald said the new Ministers should not be paid any more than their TDs’ salaries.

Deputy McDonald said:

"Having promised real reform, the new Government stuck with the tradition of jobs for the boys. The taxpayer will pick up the tab. We do not need 15 Junior Ministers.

"Junior Ministers should not be paid anymore than a TD's salary.

"Sinn Féin will be bringing forward a Bill to reduce Ministers’ pay by 40% and TDs’ pay by 20%. Becoming a Minister is a huge honour for any public representative.  A huge pay rise should not be required to motivate people for the job.” ENDS
