McGuinness welcomes Stadia funding package
Sinn Féin’s Martin McGuinness MP MLA has welcomed the bringing forward of over £110m for stadia projects in the North at today’s meeting of the Executive.
Following today’s meeting Mr McGuinness said:
“This is a very welcome development as it secures the funding for the three principle stadia representing all the main sporting codes locally.
“This is certainly a significant boost to the codes, their players and supporters who will see £61m going to the GAA for the construction of their premier stadium for Ulster at Casement Park, £25m to Windsor Park and a further £14m to rugby’s Ravenhill Park.
“It further commits the Executive to an additional £36m of funding to be utilised for the upgrading of local stadia, in the CSR period beginning in 2015 which will benefit the sport throughout the North.
“Sport plays an invaluable role in our people’s health and wellbeing. Young people in particular will through the construction of stadia be inspired and encouraged to participate in sporting activities which are good for their health.
This is also a great development for our hard pressed construction industry bringing forward over £110m of capital spending and for the regeneration of areas which are feeling the effects of social deprivation.
“It would be no understatement to say that we are all now looking forward to pushing forward with these projects and being able to watch our local sports in first class facilities.”
