New Government neglects the drugs crisis – McDonald

11 March, 2011 - by Mary Lou McDonald TD

Sinn Féin Deputy Leader Mary Lou McDonald has accused the new Government of continuing the Fianna Fáil/Green Party Government’s neglect of the drugs crisis by failing to appoint a Minister with responsibility for drugs.

Speaking today Deputy McDonald said:

“The Fianna Fáil/Green Party coalition continuously failed to resource the fight against drugs leading to what can only be described as an epidemic in many areas.

“The new Fine Gael/Labour coalition is now continuing where their predecessors left off and in fact have gone one better by failing to even appoint a Minister with responsibility for drugs.

“This shows how far removed they are from communities affected by the scourge of drugs such as some in my own constituency of Dublin Central.

“As my party has pointed out many times over the past couple of years a recession is not a time to neglect the drugs crisis as more and more people are in despair.

“With the entrance of the highly addictive crystal meth and crack cocaine to the Irish drug scene it is imperative that the new Government takes this issue seriously, appoints a Minister with responsibility for it and resources the fight against drugs on all fronts.” ENDS
