15 March, 2011 - by Caitríona Ruane

Education Minister, Caitríona Ruane, has welcomed confirmation that a former military site at Omagh will be transferred into the ownership of the Department of Education for the development of a new educational campus in Omagh.

Speaking after the announcement from OFMDFM the Education Minister said: “This confirmation on the transfer of the site at Omagh represents a further step towards the development of the Lisanelly Shared Campus. This is a visionary and inspirational project which offers Omagh a unique opportunity to shape the future educational provision for all the children of the area.

“Through collaboration and co-operation the schools in Omagh have the opportunity to improve the learning facilities and educational opportunities for their children. The shared campus will provide the potential to build an educational community where children can have access to concentrated educational expertise across a broad curriculum. All the schools involved will benefit from shared facilities while operating in an environment of equality, inclusion and promotion of mutual respect

“The project has the potential to make a positive contribution to the regeneration of Omagh. I know there remains much hard work ahead but I have little doubt the people of Omagh have the drive and aspiration to see this project become a reality. On completion the Lisanelly Educational Campus will serve this community for generations to come.”
