Voting Report - A Missed Opportunity

19 April, 2004

Sinn Féin MP for Fermanagh & South Tyrone Michelle Gildernew has said that the Electoral Commission report into voting age released today was 'a missed opportunity to address the issue of young people's alienation from the wider political process'.

Ms Gildernew said:

" Sinn Féin has long been of the opinion that the voting age should be lowered to 16. This is an equality issue. Sixteen year olds are entitled to work, marry and pay tax, yet they are denied the right to vote.

" Today's report provided an opportunity for this inequality to be addressed. The decision to lower the candidates age to 18 is welcome but the real opportunity to deal with the voting age has been missed.

" Sinn Féin will continue to campaign on this issue and we believe that eventually the issue of lowering the voting age will have to be addressed in a positive manner." ENDS
