Sinn Féin reps currently meeting with PSNI on Oldpark bomb alert

29 March, 2011 - by Gerry Kelly

Sinn Féin representatives including Gerry Kelly have this afternoon met with the PSNI in relation to the ongoing security alert in the Oldpark area of north Belfast.

Speaking immediately after the meeting Mr Kelly said;

“The PSNI have informed us that they have received a coded message from those responsible for this alert. It comes after a shooting incident in the area last night; their descriptions of where the device has been abandoned have thus far been completely vague.

The organisation responsible for abandoning this device must make clear where they have dumped this bomb in order for the search to be confined to a specific area and to prevent any injury or loss of life. Once again we have been left with a situation, like the recent alert on the Antrim Road, where ordinary people, young and old alike, have had to be taken from their homes and forced elsewhere.

The reality for the people responsible is that the community in north Belfast and right across Ireland are opposed to what they are doing; they are causing untold and unnecessary trauma on the community and for what reason they are still unwilling or indeed unable to tell us.

I would call on those responsible to stop what they are doing and to stop inflicting this on our people.” CRÍOCH
