Ellis calls for guarantee of funding for Drugs Task Forces
Speaking in the Dáil today Sinn Féin TD Dessie Ellis called on the Minister Francis Fitzgerald to give a commitment that no more funding would be cut from the Drugs Task Forces throughout the State.
Deputy Ellis said the cuts already implemented over the past couple of years are having a devastating impact on communities such as Finglas and Ballymun in his constituency.
Speaking after his Dáil encounter today Deputy Ellis said:
“Despite warnings from Sinn Féin over the last couple of years that a recession is no time to cut funding from the fight against drugs the previous Government went ahead and cut funding for drugs task forces throughout the state.
“I have seen first hand the devastating affect these cuts have had in communities like Finglas and Ballymun in my own constituency.
“For this reason I asked the Minister today to give a commitment that this Government would take a different approach from its predecessor and actually guarantee funding for drugs task forces.
“Unfortunately I did not get such a guarantee but it is an issue I will continue to pursue in this Dáil.” ENDS
