Mallow Hospital needs support not downgrading – McLellan

19 April, 2011

Sinn Féin Cork East TD Sandra McLellan, responding to the HIQA Report on Mallow General Hospital, said the Report should not result in the downgrading of Mallow but in better support for the Hospital by the HSE.

She said:

“The HIQA Report states that Mallow General Hospital is held in good standing by the local community and general practitioners and that its staff are committed to the patients they serve.

“The Report makes clear that while the level of on-site clinical staffing out of hours and some other requirements for the safe treatment of acute conditions on a 24-hour basis was not in place at the time of the HIQA investigation, this deficit was addressed by the HSE in February 2011.

“The Report is highly critical of HSE management but it appears that HIQA is singing from the same hymn-sheet as the HSE in pushing a highly centralised model of acute hospital care. This model has failed. It has resulted in the loss of services to communities served by hospitals such as Mallow and Ennis and greatly increased pressure on larger hospitals such as Cork University Hospital and Limerick Regional Hospital.

“The new Minister for Health James Reilly has said that he is reviewing hospital configuration; in doing so I urge him to move way from the highly centralised model of acute hospital care delivery.” ENDS
