Ferris calls on Government to reject gas price hike

6 May, 2011 - by Martin Ferris TD

The Sinn Féin Spokesperson on Energy Martin Ferris TD has called on the Government to reject an application by An Bord Gáis to impose a 20% increase in gas prices and a 10% increase in electricity prices on its customers.

Deputy Ferris said

“The fact that Bord Gáis made a profit of €120 million last year makes this proposed increase in energy costs inexcusable. There are already a large number of households in serious arrears and this proposed increase if ratified will greatly exacerbate that problem.

“The increase would see many more people being forced into further difficulty and mean that many people will be unable to properly heat their homes. I call on the Government to intervene with the Energy Regulator to ensure that the requested increase is not granted.”
