Funding must be made available to avert nursing home crisis – Ó Caolain

18 May, 2011 - by Caoimhghín Ó Caoláin TD

Sinn Féin Health spokesperson Caoimhghín Ó Caoláin TD has called on the Minister for Health James Reilly to make funding available immediately to avert a crisis in nursing home care.

He said:

“The Minister for Health's admission that the annual allocation of public money for the ‘Fair Deal’ nursing home care scheme for older people has already run out in only the fifth month of the year beggars belief.

“It is appalling that the Minister, his Department and the HSE have allowed such a situation to develop. What kind of strategic management is in place when a vital scheme such as this can effectively collapse?

“Older people and their families seeking nursing home care now face the full cost of care or a long waiting list, in breach of the promises repeatedly made to them for this ‘Fair Deal’ scheme.

“Minister Reilly must act by making available the necessary funding. The Government should be funding the care of our older people, not pouring further billions into the banks.” ENDS
