Ongoing use of Shannon Airport by US military undermines Irish neutrality – Mac Lochlainn

19 May, 2011 - by Pádraig Mac Lochlainn

Speaking today following his participation at the Peace and Neutrality Alliance Press Conference (PANA) at Buswells Hotel in Dublin, Sinn Féin Spokesperson on Foreign Affairs Pádraig Mac Lochlainn TD said that the ongoing use of Shannon Airport in the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq undermines the State's position on neutrality.

He said:

"In 2010 there was an average of at least three US military flights a day travelling through Shannon airport. During that same year four planes linked to the CIA's "extraordinary rendition" program also used the airport, as identified by several international human rights groups and the EU parliamentary committee set up to investigate such flights.

"PANA's research conducted by Landsdowne Market Research Surveys, shows that Irish people widely disapprove of US military traffic travelling through Shannon airport .

" Ireland can not be complicit with human rights violations.

"I commend PANA for holding this important event in advance of the US Presidential trip to Ireland."
