Crowe welcomes cloud computing announcement

31 May, 2011 - by Seán Crowe TD

Sinn Féin’s Education Spokesperson Deputy Séan Crowe TD has welcomed today’s announcement that the Cork Institute for Technology (CIT) is to offer the world’s first degree in cloud computing.

Deputy Crowe said:

“Today’s news will help create jobs in the specialised IT Sector and is very welcome.

“Cloud computing is cutting edge technology that is set to revolutionise how we use computers and the internet. Having the world’s first degree course in cloud computing available in CIT means Ireland can be to the fore in skilling its workforce and attracting much needed employment from top level software companies.

“It is also important that Ireland has a fit for purpose nationwide broadband network otherwise any benefits gained in this sector will be undermined by an inability to support this new technology.

“We are still some way from achieving this. The latest figures from Eurostat show that Ireland lags behind the EU average in broadband capacity. These findings are backed up by an Ipsos MRBI survey where 69 per cent of engineers say that Irish companies cannot compete effectively at international level as long as the country’s broadband connection is below the EU average.

“The delivery of this exciting new course must be accompanied by the upgrading our fibre optic network so that we can be to the fore in developing this new technology.” ENDS
