FAI should not support Blatter - McLellan

31 May, 2011

Sinn Féin's Spokesperson on Sport, Sandra McLellan, has called on the FAI to withhold support for Sepp Blatter in tomorrow's FIFA presidential election in light of the cloud of corruption hanging over the organisation.

Speaking from Leinster House today Deputy McLellan said:

"Despite Mr.Blatter's protestation to the contrary, there are serious questions raised regarding the governance of FIFA and the conduct of its most senior officials.

“The FAI should use its mandate to echo the views of hundreds of thousands of fans across Ireland and millions across the world and speak out against the current goings-on at the very top of soccer's governing body. They should request a postponement of tomorrow's presidential election until such time as a complete investigation of the growing allegations is complete."

"The current situation is very bad for soccer and very bad for sport. Not only is it a terrible example for those young children who look up to those in positions of authority within the world game, but it is an insult to the thousands of people who volunteer their time for free to ensure that soccer is alive and well."
