Education Consultant Spend Down by £1M

31 May, 2011

Sinn Féin Education Spokesperson Daithi McKay has welcomed the declining figure paid to consultants in the Department of Education.

Mr McKay stated,

“Sinn Féin believes that the use of consultants must be minimised in all the Departments and I welcome the latest figures that show a decrease of over £1 million in the Education Department since 2007.

“There are a vast number of civil servants with a huge array of expertise so it is important that these talents are utilised by the department instead of consultants in order to minimise cost.  Sinn Féin has worked hard to address this problem so as to free up monies for frontline services such as capital build.

“While this massive decline in spending is to be welcomed I hope that more can be done to reduce and maintain the lowest possible cost to the Department in maintaining this trend.

“However this exercise is fruitless unless it is replicated in all public bodies so a root and branch review of the use of consultants is needed in order to ensure the effective use of public funds.
