de Brun concerned at LFA developments
Speaking today from Strasbourg, Sinn Fein MEP Bairbre de Brun expressed her concern about the ongoing review by the European Commission into the designation of Less Favoured Areas (LFAs).
"LFA land constitutes approximately 70% of the total utilisable agricultural land in the north of Ireland , with the LFACA scheme worth around £22 million annually to producers, to compensate for the difficulties they face.
"Any proposal from the Commission to alter the criteria for the definition of 'less favoured', such as moving away from soci-economic disadvantage, could have serious repercussions for our industry at home.
"I have already discussed the matter with the UFU and NIAPA and I will do whatever I can to try to ensure that any changes proposed to the LFA designation would have a minimal effect on the north", de Brun concluded.
