Alarming abuse allegations at Rostrevor House highlight the dire need for Whistleblower Legislation – O’Brien
Speaking from Leinster House today, Sinn Féin Justice Spokesperson Jonathan O’Brien reiterated his call on the Minister for Justice to immediately introduce comprehensive Whistleblower legislation.
Deputy O’Brien said:
“The revelations today by the Health Information and Quality Authority, highlight the urgent need for the Minister to set a date for the introduction of comprehensive Whistleblower Legislation.
“HIQA have uncovered what they term as a serious risk to the life or health of residents due to negligence at the Rostrevor House Nursing Home in Rathgar in Dublin.
“Apart from the complaints of elder abuse and assaults, what is manifest from this situation is the abject fear and powerlessness of the workers in coming forward to give information.
“HIQA detailed cases of staff at the nursing home being fearful of losing their jobs by reporting these incidents.
“This was compounded by the fact that some were dependant on this employment to preserve their working visas.
“It is obvious that we need protections for people in these circumstances so that they can open the lid on wrong doing in the workplace, and in cases like this protect the most vulnerable in society.”
