Ó Clochartaigh ag lorg Díospóireacht ar na hEalaíona

17 June, 2011

Is áis fíor-luachmar í an ealaín i dtuairim an tSeanadóra Trevor Ó Clochartaigh, agus ní mór dúinn buntáiste iomlán a bhaint aisti.

Bhí an Seanadóir ó Shinn Féin ag labhairt sa Seanad inniu (Déardaoin) ar an bhfiúntas a bhaineann an tír seo as an ealaín, go stairiúil, agus sa lá atá inniu ann chomh maith. Thréaslaigh sé le Colum McCann, ar bhuaigh an duais Impac dá leabhair ‘Let the Great World Spin’, fianaise go bhfuil an tír seo fos ag cruthú scribhneoirí atá i measc na scribhneoirí is fearr ar domhain, dar leis. Bhí sé ag labhairt ar lá comórtha James Joyce, 'Bloomsday', agus dúirt sé go mba lá iontach feiliúnach sin le díospóireacht leathan a lorg sa Seanad ar thábhacht na n-ealaíon dúinn mar thír ó thaobh féiniúlacht, cruthaitheacht agus eacnamaíochta de.

Tá imní léírithe ag an Seanadóir go ndéanfar dochar don infreastruchtúr ealaíona go náisiúnta mar thoradh ar an ngéarchéím eacnamaíochta agus gur anois an t-am, i bhfad roimh an bhuiséad, le plé cuimsitheach a dhéanamh ar thábhacht an earnáil.

'Is áis luachmhar í an ealaín. Ní amháin ó thaobh dínit an duine agus ó thaobh spiorad an phobail, ach tá sé soléir go mbeidh sé in ann cabhrú linn teacht amach as an duibheagán ina bhfuil muid mar thír. Tagann na milliúin turasóirí anseo gach bliain chomh maith, de bharr an cháil atá ar ealaín na tíre seo. Tá sé riachtanach go bhfaigheann na healaíona an tacaíocht cuí, agus go mbíonn diospóireacht cuimsitheach againn ar ról na healaíne sa tír seo.'

Ó Clochartaigh demands debate on the Arts

The arts are an extremely valuable resource, and it's vital we support them and take full advantage of the potential they offer, according to Senator Trevor Ó Clochartaigh.

The Sinn Féin Senator was speaking in the Seanad on Thursday, where he noted he immense benefit that Ireland has drawn from the arts historically and up to the present day.

He congratulated author, Colum McCann, who won the Impac Prize for his book 'Let the Great World Spin'.

He said, “It is a tremendous achievement to win the worlds biggest literary prize, proof that Ireland continues to produce some of the finest writers in the world.”

Ó Clochartaigh maintained that it being 'Bloomsday' this was the ideal opportunity to call for a wide ranging debate on the Arts and how best the State could give them the recognition and support they deserve.

“I am seeking a debate on the importance of the arts as a means of human expression, creativity and economic importance.

“'The arts are an invaluable resource. Not only in terms of human dignity and the national spirit, but also regarding their role in helping us out of the current dark space we are in as a nation. Millions of tourists come here every year on this basis of our strong artistic and cultural history.

“It is vital that the arts receive the appropriate supports, and that we have a comprehensive debate on the role of the arts in this country before budgetary decisions are made which could have disastrous consequences for the sector and the country as a whole.”
